At World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced its new programming language for developing apps. “Swift”, an open source language, will be a big deal for not only developers, but for the stakeholders of Apple too.
Up till now, Apple’s choice of language was Objective C. Many developers have complained about Objective C over the past decade because of its old methods and techniques. They said that it is like speaking Latin. The introduction of Swift will surely resolve all these problems.
Chung, a spokesperson of Apple said:
“Swift is trying to borrow the best elements of moderately newer popular languages like Python and JavaScript. These are just more modern, colloquial languages that more developers today understand. They are easier to learn, and things don’t break as easily in them”.
But one of the drawbacks of these simpler languages is that they lack performance, when we compare them to Objective C. But Apple has ensured that Swift will have both simplicity and performance in its frameworks.
One important thing about Swift is that it is an open source programming language. This means that developers can continue development and make this a language a better one. Swift’s functions and methods are backward-compatible with that of Objective C. Apple has advised the developers to contribute only small improvements, rather than adding huge changes to the language.
One thing that will add luxury to iPhone application development is that the developers can see the instant result of their code. It wasn’t possible in the past. This means that developers can learn the concepts faster and improve their skills more efficiently.
