Have you ever wondered where does WordPress store images and other media on your website? Many beginners ask this question frequently that where the images are stored and how can one manage the media library. Well, we have decided finally to reveal the answer of this question.
There is a built-in system installed in WordPress which manages the media file of your website. This system allows you to add, edit or delete files from the media library.
All of the files are organized in monthly and yearly folders. By default, the media files are stored in the following path.
…/wp-content/uploads/…
If you want to view this folder, then use FTP client and connect it with your website. WordPress doesn’t only save the images in the folder. It also adds relevant information, e.g. post type, post meta etc.
When a person sets a photo as featured image, WordPress uploads the image in post-meta table, with id of ‘key_thumbnail_id’. There are some other points that you should learn too.
- If you delete a file from the server using FTP client, the image will still be there in WordPress database, but it will appear as broken image on the site.
- Similarly, if you delete references to the photos from database, the images will not appear in WordPress site, even if they are still there in the server.
